Hunter S. Thompson fue un escritor norteamericano que durante los años 60 y 70 trabajó redactando artículos para medios gráficos como la revista Rolling Stone y la Playboy, desarrollando una forma de narración denominada “Gonzo”, en la cual el protagonista de las historias es el propio periodista al describir las impresiones sobre los acontecimientos de manera arbitraria y subjetiva. En base a una prosa directa, desprejuiciada y por momentos alucinógena, Thompson, un aventurero adicto a las armas, las drogas, el alcohol y los debates polémicos, se convirtió en un personaje de culto que llegó a plasmar su locura literaria en libros como ‘Hell’s Angels: la extraña y terrible saga de las bandas forajidas de motociclistas’ o ‘Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas’ (Pánico y Locura en Las Vegas ), esta última llevada al cine por Terry Gilliam y protagonizada por Johnny Depp y Benicio Del Toro. Es justamente Depp el encargado de narrar las historias del narcótico escritor en esta excéntrica biografía dirigida por Alex Gibney, ganador de un Oscar por su trabajo, también documental, ‘Taxi to the Dark Side’ (2007). A video tribute to the doctor of gonzo journalism… The late Great Hunter S. Thompson. I was lucky enough to see him speak a couple times. So I put together some random photos, trying to catch the spirit of the message from this truly American icon. It is set to a clip of some of his speeches, looped together. A couple years back, I was going to a wedding in Aspen, and I thought it would be cool to head to the Woody Creek Tavern, who knows- maybe even bump into the good doctor. Eight days before I was to head out to Colorado, I woke up turned on CNN, and saw file footage of HST. I remembered seeing similiar footage of Stevie Ray Vaughan and later, Jerry Garcia and knew something bad happened. An arms bust, a court date, smuggling chinchillas at the border….who knows?..something weird- but not unusual for him… But dead? Eight days later …in the Woody Creek Tavern, the mood was somber. They had lost a friend and neighbor, and tourists like me, were showing up, making some sort of grim pilgrimage, asking dumb questions. Looking at my piles of buffalo wing bones trying to read them like cosmic tea leaves…I was…thinking…what was the reason for all of this???!!!… Then it dawned on me… “When the going gets weird, the tough turn Pro…” Fare thee well, good doctor! Let the great scorer mark no ill against you!
