Life after Dr. Gonzo

A video tribute to the doctor of gonzo journalism… The late Great Hunter S. Thompson. I was lucky enough to see him speak a couple times. So I put together some random photos, trying to catch the spirit of the message from this truly American icon. It is set to a clip of some of his speeches, looped together. A couple years back, I was going to a wedding in Aspen, and I thought it would be cool to head to the Woody Creek Tavern, who knows- maybe even bump into the good doctor. Eight days before I was to head out to Colorado, I woke up turned on CNN, and saw file footage of HST. I remembered seeing similiar footage of Stevie Ray Vaughan and later, Jerry Garcia and knew something bad happened. An arms bust, a court date, smuggling chinchillas at the border….who knows?..something weird- but not unusual for him… But dead? Eight days later …in the Woody Creek Tavern, the mood was somber. They had lost a friend and neighbor, and tourists like me, were showing up, making some sort of grim pilgrimage, asking dumb questions. Looking at my piles of buffalo wing bones trying to read them like cosmic tea leaves…I was…thinking…what was the reason for all of this???!!!… Then it dawned on me… “When the going gets weird, the tough turn Pro…” Fare thee well, good doctor! Let the great scorer mark no ill against you!
I really wish I could have met Hunter in person when he was alive. He had so much more to contribute to the world in enlightening people about what is going on in politics.
Very nice piece Muthafudgical.
Thank You
What a guy,I liked the video, gd pics.
Thanks alot…the good doctor must have been channeled through me.
Hey great writing man. I enjoyed your description….
In only 7 years The Bush Team have sent the most Supereconomical Country in the world into recession, how sad. Yet something tells me the people behind it won’t have to suffer its consequences. They are bible bashers though, so, maybe they’ll suffer later. THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL!
I am so in love with his bitterness, its so REAL, he really is the last TRUE drug fiend, he looked for thrill; not really an escape in his escapades. He knew there was no escape truly. Rather he went to the other side of reality( in drug form) and threw it in our faces in literary form….long live the way of Gonzo motherfuckers…
It was very nice to listen to…but I wonder, after hearing him say “governor of California” the way he did, if he saw “Junior”…oddly, I can imagine him watching it…I really can.
The photos were nice, too. Where did you get all these? Most of the stuff Google gives me is the same 5 images on 20 million different sites…damn the New Dumb.
I read your summary…that must have been a serious bummer for you. I never knew of his death until I finished “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” (the infamous “gateway book”) and, in retrospect, recall that it was the same year I almost pulled the same ’stunt’ (if you will)…
I never had an opportunity to see Hunter in person so thanks for sharing.
i don’t care for the video… hunter speaks for himself. but if you want a pat on the back: great job wait a minute the video ain’t done yet. the end is fuckin the best. let the weird get weird, when they do the WE turn pro!; (i know it’s not the true HST quote)
